Fall Planting for Summer Success | Desert Botanical Garden

OPEN DAILY 8 A.M.|7 A.M. FOR MEMBERS WED. & SUN.

Did you know that when you plant in the desert southwest, the timing can greatly impact the survival rate of your plants? Fall is the perfect season for planting, boasting a remarkable 95% survival rate, whereas summer planting only offers a mere 40% survival rate. Additionally, during the summer, we consume 80% of the landscape’s water, in contrast to just 30% used in the fall.

If these statistics aren’t enough to persuade you to plant in the fall, consider this: the cooler days and nights create an optimal soil temperature for root development. This environment allows plants to grow and roots to expand, helping them establish themselves in their new surroundings and preparing them for the challenges of summer. Furthermore, cooler temperatures result in less water loss for the plants. With proper care and management, you can significantly reduce plant loss during the summer months.

Here are some additional tips to ensure the survival of your newly planted flora:

  • Choose heat-adapted plants and place them in suitable sun exposure, allowing enough space for their future growth.
  • Water immediately after planting; however, for succulents, wait one to two weeks before watering.
  • Water newly planted plants every three to four days, gradually increasing the interval as temperatures cool. Succulents can be watered every 14 to 21 days. If it rains, skip the watering.
  • Water deeply and broadly to promote a robust root system.
  • Refrain from pruning newly planted plants, as they need their leaves to produce food for their developing roots. You may prune away any dead, broken, or diseased stems or branches, but wait at least a year before considering further pruning.
