OPEN DAILY 8 A.M.|7 A.M. FOR MEMBERS WED. & SUN.

Our beautiful desert city presents families with being creative outdoors when dealing with high temps. The Garden offers early morning and post-sunset outs for a great place to soak up your Vitamin D.

There are many reasons why playing outside is still good for kids even in the summer

  • Exploring their neighborhood builds a sense of connection to the place where they live and helps kids develop a sense of community.
  • Experiencing the natural environment helps kids connect with and care about nature.
  • Playing outside helps kids learn to move their body in active ways, developing stronger skills in balance and movement.
  • The outdoor environment is the perfect place for learning, wondering and allowing kids to follow their curiosity.

So, let’s get outside! Be heat-aware and avoid the hottest parts of the day. Pack water and sun protection and have fun!

Check out this fun summer bingo challenge. Below, you’ll find a printable template with simple outdoor activities and challenges adapted to the summer weather. If you complete an activity, cross it off on your bingo sheet!

What you’ll need:

  • Summer Challenge Bingo Sheet (print out our version or make your own!)
  • A marker or pencil

Go on a Night Walk/Bug Hunt:

Be like the animals that thrive in the desert and go nocturnal! Explore your neighborhood or a safe trail at night. Don’t forget water and a flashlight. You can challenge yourself to look for bugs or just enjoy the night air.

Track how much water you drink in a day:

Staying hydrated is essential in the summertime, especially when playing outside. Make a Water Log and track how much water you drink in a day. To make this easier, use one water bottle or cup and track how many times you need to refill it.

Go on an early morning bird walk:

Birds are most active during the cooler parts of the day and we can be too! Get the early worm and get outside in the early morning.

Go outside on a full moon night:

Look up the lunar cycle and find out when the next full moon will be. What can you see when the moon is at its brightest?

Build a shade fort:

Shade is very important in the desert. Try building a shade fort outside using materials you already have like bedsheets or cardboard boxes.

The Garden is open at 6 a.m. daily (morning bird walk, anyone?) and features fun nighttime programming like Desert Oasis Garden After Dark and Flashlight Nights. Garden After Dark is a fun way to experience the desert environment like never before and is included with admission every night. Summer Saturdays are Flashlight Nights – join us for family friendly fun!
