Backyard Bats | Desert Botanical Garden

OPEN DAILY 8 A.M.|7 A.M. FOR MEMBERS WED. & SUN.

Fall is upon us. The trees are shedding their leaves, animals are preparing for the cold weather and ghoulish friends come out to say hello.

This craft is not only a Halloween decoration, but also a great way to make use of all those tree shedding’s on the ground. Head outside and collect some sticks and leaves to make a friendly nature bat that will love hanging with you. You can stick this bat anywhere!

What you’ll need:

  • Toilet paper roll (or paper towel)
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Black or grey paper (or white paper colored black)
  • Sticks
  • Leaves
  • Liquid school glue
  • Scissors

Step 2:

Cut out your eyes (or use googly eyes), mouth (or pipe cleaners), ears and wings (or leaves).

Step 3:

Take the leaves you have collected and glue them onto your wings. Once the leaves have had some time to sit and connect with the glue, take the end of the wing and glue it to the toilet paper roll.

Step 4:

Start to glue your sticks onto the toilet paper roll. You can put as many as desired- grab sticks that are straighter since they are easier to glue.

Step 5:

Your sticks will need some time to dry, so while you wait come up with the perfect name for your bat and where you want to hang it up! Once you have the perfect name and place, glue the eyes and mouth on the opposite side of the holes, and glue your ears right above that inside the toilet paper roll.

 Step 6:

Bats can’t hang upside down without their feet, so we’re going to add them. Take a pipe cleaner and thread it through the hole so that it is even on both sides. Twist the pipe cleaner where it is closest to the hole to help it stay put, then fold the end of the pipe cleaner to look like little feet. Repeat for the other foot.

Step 7:

Now your bat should be complete! Go to the perfect spot you chose out and wrap the pipe cleaner feet around it or hook it, and your bat should be hanging upside down!

Great job my fa-boo-lous friends, I bet you squashed this activity!
