Summer Plant SOS | Desert Botanical Garden

OPEN DAILY 8 A.M.|7 A.M. FOR MEMBERS WED. & SUN.

Record breaking heat is hard on us, imagine what’s going on with your plant. Here are some helpful tips to provide them relief:

  1. If your plants are turning yellow, place shade cloth over the plants until temperatures are in the 90s.
  2. Since we haven’t receive any significant rainfall, water your established plants (plants that have been in the ground for over three years). Water them deeply.
  3. Any cactus or succulents in containers, should be watered a couple times a week. Or move containers in an area that receives morning sun or afternoon shade until temperatures moderate.
  4. Do not prune or fertilize your desert plants. When it’s hot like it has been, let your plants make it through the hot summer, by not encouraging new growth.
  5. Mulch around your desert trees, shrubs, perennials and vines. At least 2 to 3 inches thick but keep mulch away from the base of the stems.
