The Garden is thrilled to share an exciting new book “Sonoran Desert’s Got Magic!” that celebrates the Garden’s 85th anniversary. This one-of-a-kind children’s book is a collaborative effort by Pam Hait and Martha Hunter Henderson, who have been avid supporters of the Garden for several decades. They wanted to do something that could ignite a love for the desert in kids.
The Inspiration Behind the Book
Pam and Martha created a children’s story aimed at engaging families and sparking a love for the desert in young readers to Garden leadership. They noticed few books focus on the Sonoran Desert, and those that do portray it as a dry, dark place. They instead created a vibrant story that introduces kids to the magic of this bright and lively ecosystem.
In “Sonoran Desert’s Got Magic!” Pam and Martha aim for children and their parents to understand that the Sonoran Desert thrives because of the intricate relationships among its plants and creatures. From the towering saguaro to the often-overlooked termite, every living thing plays a crucial role in this unique environment. In their book, the Sonoran Desert is not just a backdrop but a treasure trove of lessons about the natural world.
Creating “Sonoran Desert’s Got Magic!” was a two-year journey filled with research, creativity, and collaboration. The authors conducted thorough scientific research to ensure accuracy while also keeping the narrative engaging. Centered around a talent show featuring various desert plants and creatures competing to become the new “face” of Desert Botanical Garden, Pam and Martha showcase their knowledge of desert life in a relatable way for young readers.
With the help of local children’s book author and illustrator Michael Hale, the story’s visuals came to life, capturing the spirit and personalities of the desert’s inhabitants. Pam and Martha have worked together for more than 30 years, and their shared passion for the Garden shines through.
