Tucson Cactus and Succulent Society Donates More Than 300 Native Desert Plantings, on Display at Sonoran Desert Nature Trail | Desert Botanical Garden

OPEN DAILY 8 A.M.|7 A.M. FOR MEMBERS WED. & SUN.

If you’re strolling the Sonoran Desert Nature Trail, you might notice new plantings at the top of the trail. These plantings come from the Tucson Cactus and Succulent Society, who works to re-locate and rescue cactus and other native plants when there is undergoing development in natural areas nearby Tucson.

From one of those salvages, Tucson Cactus and Succulent Society donated over 300 specimens to Desert Botanical Garden. These plants come from Oro Valley and Vail and were carefully collected for preservation due to ongoing construction in the area. A key part of Desert Botanical Garden’s mission, we strive for the conservation of desert plants of the world with emphasis on the Sonoran Desert. These salvaged plants are native to Arizona, and their recent addition to our collection adds significant value due to their wild origin and the increase in available plant data they provide Garden’s researchers. They also increase possibilities for plant propagation of certain species, cross pollinating the individuals for seed production.  The Garden’s partnerships with organizations like the Tucson Cactus and Succulent Society strengthen our commitment to plant conservation and demonstrate how collaborating with Arizona partners can advance our shared values of stewardship, protection and the preservation of desert plants.

We hope you enjoy this recent addition to our collection as you stroll around Sonoran Desert Nature Trail!
