Family Portraits Inspired by Fernando Botero | Desert Botanical Garden

OPEN DAILY 8 A.M.|7 A.M. FOR MEMBERS WED. & SUN.

Portraits are works of art that can tell us how someone looks, what they like or special characteristics about their personalities. Portraits can also show an activity someone is doing.

Take a look at the picture below. How many family members are in “La Familia” by Fernando Botero? What are they doing in the picture?

Partner up with a friend or family member. You will each create a portrait of yourself and another of your family. Think about the following questions as you plan your portraits:

  • What special qualities about you or your family do you want to include?
  • How can you show these unique ideas in your drawing?

Use the boxes on the following page to illustrate your personal and family portraits.

Once you are finished, exchange your portraits. What can you share about the people you drew? Are there any similarities or differences?

Fernando Botero (Colombia, 1932); Family in the Plantation, 2020; Oil on canvas; 70 51/64 x 63 inches Private Collection of the Botero Family.
