Desert Botanical Garden Announces 2021 Fall Programming for Kids and Their Families

September 10, 2021

Phoenix, Sept. 10, 2021 – Discover! Explore! Learn! This fall, Desert Botanical Garden offers an exciting and captivating array of events and exhibits for kids and their families. Garden visitors will be able to see thousands of Southwestern butterflies, take part in a variety of entertaining activities and learn about fascinating plants in nature.

“We are thrilled to offer a lineup of events and exhibits that encourage kids to connect with the natural world,” says Marie Long, the Garden’s Director of Education. “Kids will experience the wonders of the Garden, and will feel inspired to explore and learn about the amazing world of plants.”

Starting Sept. 25, families can experience an up-close interaction with thousands of butterflies from the Southwest at the Fall Butterfly Exhibit. The exhibit showcases the importance of Monarch butterflies in the Southwest’s ecosystem. Visitors can learn how these fluttery creatures care for and protect the desert environment. Watch these insects at each life stage in the butterfly pavilion, from caterpillars growing on host plants to chrysalises in the emergence chamber. The exhibit is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Sept. 25 through Nov. 19.

For those drawn to insects and living creatures, Cocoon: A Place for Garden Play is the space for you.  Outside of the butterfly exhibit, kids will find fun, buggy activities to test their insect superpowers at Cocoon, which is open from Sept. 25 through Nov. 19 from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Once kids are done visiting the butterfly exhibit, the Garden invites children 12 and under to Cactus Clubhouse. This nature play space provides unstructured, child-led activities for kids 12 and under to discover the fun of the natural world. Cactus Clubhouse will open this fall, stay tuned for details.

All three experiences are included in a general Garden admission ticket or with a Garden membership.

The Garden is excited to launch an activity kit for kids and their families to experience the Garden from their homes. Cactus Kids Activity Kit includes six different experiences with instructions in English and Spanish to some of the Garden’s most popular activities, like nature walks and hands-on explorations.  The kit is for children 7 to 12 and is $25 for members and $30 for the general public. Order yours online starting Sept. 24.

Cactus Kids Club is for kids 12 and under. Cactus Kids will dig into Garden trails, learn about the wonders of the Sonoran Desert, meet enchanting creatures and enjoy fun onsite activities. Gain access to exclusive Garden gear and offers for Garden experiences.

The safety of members, guests, staff and volunteers is the Garden’s primary concern. Advance ticket reservations are required. Face masks also are required in indoor spaces and when social distancing is not possible. Learn more about the Garden’s safety precautions at dbg.org/safety. Ready to plan your visit?
