Presentation – Featuring Abra Lee

Join celebrated gardener, writer and historian Abra Lee for a special event at Desert Botanical Garden. Lee will share stories behind several key figures from her upcoming book “Conquer the Soil: Black America and the Untold Stories of Our Country’s Gardeners, Farmers, and Growers.”
From the ordinary to the extraordinary Black America has long sown seeds of greatness in the garden. It was nothing short of a grand affair when Blanche Hurston launched her Florida plant business during the roaring 20s. And when it came time to sell beautiful blooms, the mighty Mahalia Jackson made customers an offer they couldn’t refuse! Join us to hear an extraordinary tale of espionage in the name of flowers and learn about familial ties to the Harlem Renaissance. This will be an uplifting celebration of iconic plant people in America and their historic achievements.
Her talk will feature the inspiring lives of black men and women whose accomplished careers in the plant world are little known or untold. Lee’s work has been featured in publications including The New York Times, Fine Gardening and Veranda magazine.

In collaboration with ASU’s Project Humanities, following the presentation on Wednesday evening, Lee will be joined by local gardeners and horticulturalists for a panel discussion about empowering lives through gardening. Panelists include:
