DESERT BOTANICAL GARDEN CELEBRATES 80TH ANNIVERSARY WITH COMMUNITY CELEBRATION FEB. 16

January 18, 2019

Phoenix, Ariz. – Desert Botanical Garden is set to celebrate its 80th anniversary on Feb. 16 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and you are invited! In the 1930s, a small group of passionate local citizens saw the need to conserve the beautiful desert environment. One was Swedish botanist Gustaf Starck, who found like-minded residents by posting a sign that read “Save the Desert” with an arrow pointing to his home. With the support of social influencers of the time such as Gertrude Divine Webster, the Garden was founded.

Eight decades later, thanks to leadership and investments from many individuals, Desert Botanical Garden has blossomed from a dream into a living museum, unlike any other. The Garden has grown during its history into a compelling attraction and desert conservation pioneer.

“Since we opened, Desert Botanical Garden has been a state treasure and has welcomed nearly a half a million visitors each year,” says Garden director Ken Schutz. “As we commemorate 80 years as the state’s largest environmental learning center, the Garden has been preserving desert plants and focused on conserving desert plants for generations to come.  want to celebrate with the community and thank them for their 80 years of visiting and supporting the Garden.”
