FRAMERATE: Desert Pulse, a multi-sensory art exhibit by ScanLAB Projects, invites visitors into the visual and emotional energy of the Sonoran Desert. Through photography, motion, and sound, it reveals new ways of seeing and deepens appreciation for our vibrant ecosystem.
ScanLAB Projects
ScanLAB Projects is an artist-led studio exploring the world through machine vision technologies – founded in 2010 by Matt Shaw (b 1983) and William Trossell (b 1985). Pioneering the artistry of 3D scanning, their work has explored former concentration camps, melting arctic ice, the formation of memory, and the motion of dancers, to create dynamic artworks and fact-based datasets utilized for scientific papers, climate activism, and journalism. In an era of generative AI, computer graphics, and synthetic realities, ScanLAB embraces their commitment to investigation, precision, equity, sustainability and truth.
Sustainability & Impact
Desert Pulse is an artwork underpinned by sustainable values. ScanLAB Projects and the Garden have rigorously considered and documented the impacts of making and exhibiting this work at all stages of its production so far. Together they are committed to upholding these values in the future, and ask any venues, partners and supporters to join in taking these values forward. At times, this means making decisions that cost more but impact less.
Rivian Partnership
The Garden has a meaningful partnership with Rivian Automotive Inc., with the shared use and loan of their electric R1T. This generous partnership is instrumental in supporting Desert Pulse. Rivian’s contribution aligns perfectly with the environmental themes underpinning ScanLAB’s artwork, alongside the Garden’s mission to advance excellence in education, research, exhibition and conservation of desert plants.
Meet the Artists
Matthew Shaw, Director
Matt Shaw is an Artist and Creative Director. He is the co-Founder of ScanLAB Projects, an artist-led studio exploring the world through machine vision technologies, founded in 2010, alongside artist William Trossell (b. 1985). Known for their evocative and ambitious body of precision-crafted physical and digital artworks which reveal and reflect on beauty, fragility and resilience, ScanLAB Projects invite and challenge us to explore our collective future. Shaw’s work operates at the intersection between art and architecture, emerging technologies and critical design. Focusing on finely crafted aesthetics, fabrication, storytelling and impact, he explores how evolving photographic and 3D scanning techniques can be a powerful medium for documentation and expression. Shaw’s practice serves to bear witness to the environment and society, and offers a glimpse into a future we might all inhabit. Shaw’s work has been shown at the Royal Academy (UK), LACMA (USA), Venice Biennale (IT), Barbican (UK), the Photographers’ Gallery (UK), Southbank Centre (UK), the Science Museum (UK), The New Museum (USA) and SXSW (USA). Matt holds a BSc, MArch and MPhil from Cardiff University and the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL.
William Trossell, Director
Will Trossell is an Artist and Technical Director. He is the co-Founder of ScanLAB Projects, an artist-led studio exploring the world through machine vision technologies, founded in 2010, alongside artist Matt Shaw (b. 1983). Trossell’s work invents extraordinary ways to expand our understanding of complex systems and environments. He integrates creative development with a visionary approach to engineering, using sensor technologies, computational photography and Renderella – ScanLAB’s custom 3D engine – to explore and unveil alternate perspectives of our material world, illuminating the beauty and fragility of our surroundings. Will holds a Master of Architecture and a Bachelor of Science from the Bartlett School of Architecture UCL. His projects have been exhibited internationally at institutions including the Royal Academy (UK), LACMA (USA), Venice Biennale (IT), Barbican (UK), the Photographers’ Gallery (UK), Southbank Centre (UK), the Science Museum (UK), The New Museum (USA) and SXSW (USA).
