The Tancer Distinguished Speaker Series presents Melissa Sevigny, author of “Brave the Wild River: The Untold Story of Two Women Who Mapped the Botany of the Grand Canyon”. 

“Brave the Wild River” has won numerous awards including the 2024 Southwest Book of the Year top pick and Winner of the 2023 National Outdoor Book Award for History/Biography. Featured by People magazine, New York Times, New Yorker, San Francisco Chronicle, Los Angeles Review of Books, Science and Associated Press. 

Melissa L. Sevigny grew up in Tucson, Arizona where she fell in love with the Sonoran Desert’s ecology, geology and dark desert skies.  Melissa is the full-time science reporter at KNAU-Arizona Public Radio. She has an MFA in creative writing and environment from Iowa State University.  She is an author of other notable titles and resident of Flagstaff, Arizona.

Kate Baker, CPA, retired from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona as its Treasurer in 2015. Kate now volunteers her time for a variety of charitable causes. Kate is a current trustee of Desert Botanical Garden and a past board president. She has served on many committees, including chairing the Audit Committee and Planned Giving CommitteeShe is a past regional board chair for Teach for America Phoenix. She previously served as a vice president for the Desert Botanical Garden Foundation Board and as Vice President for Act One Foundation

Shelley Cohn

Community Volunteer

Shelley Cohn is a current trustee and past board president of Desert Botanical Garden. She has served on many committees, including chairing strategic planning processes, the Governance/Nominating, the Research, Collections and Horticulture (RCH) and the Art Advisory Committees. She retired in 2005 as executive director of the Arizona Commission on the Arts after 29 years. She is an arts consultant for the Flinn Foundation and recent board chair of the Arizona Community Foundation. Shelley has served on other Arizona boards, including Childsplay, ASU Hillel and Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix. She is a member of Charter 100 and Arizona Women’s Forum. Shelley has a Bachelor of Arts in English from Washington University and a Master of Science in Humanities from Arizona State University.

Alexander D. Falkenstein

Vice President, Senior Portfolio Advisor | Northern Trust 

Alexander D. Falkenstein is an investment advisor at Northern Trust and active in the community, previously serving on the Ronald McDonald House Charities Board of Directors. Alexander serves on the Advisory Board for St. Vincent de Paul and volunteers to teach financial literacy curriculum to young adults leaving foster care through Foster Arizona Housing Project. He also serves on the Desert Botanical Garden Foundation Board. Alexander is a member of the Arizona Rare Fruit Growers and maintains a collection of subtropical fruit trees in Mesa. The yard was highlighted in the New York Times in 2022.

Lori Higuera

Assistant General Counsel | Freeport-McMoRan 

Lori Higuera is the assistant general counsel for Freeport-McMoRan. Currently, Lori serves on boards for the Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust Foundation and the Center for the Future of Arizona. Lori is a former trustee of Desert Botanical Garden. Lori has been recognized by various local organizations, such as AZ Business Magazine who named her as one of the “25 Most Influential Hispanic Leaders in Arizona.”  In 2021, the Maricopa County Bar Association inducted Lori into the Hall of Fame; in 2022, the Arizona Hispanic Chamber of Commerce bestowed her with the 2022 Woman of the Year Award and Arizona Capital Times named her as one of the 2022 Women Achievers.

Vice President and Associate General Counsel | TPI Composites, Inc. 

Jenny Holsman Tetreault serves as the Vice President and Associate General Counsel for TPI Composite, responsible for the company’s global anti-corruption and regulatory compliance programs and supports multiple business units, including Human Resources, Supply Chain, Field Services, IT and ESG. Jenny currently serves as Board Chair for the Phoenix Public Library Foundation and Big Brothers Big Sisters and sits on the Board for many other organizations, including the United Way, Girl Scouts, Ballet Arizona, Phoenix Symphony and The Nature Conservancy. Jenny was honored by the Phoenix Chamber of Commerce as the ATHENA recipient for the private sector in 2024, an Outstanding Woman in Business by the Phoenix Business Journal in 2024 and a Woman of Achievement in 2023 by In Business Magazine. Jenny is is a two-time chair of the Garden’s Fund the Farm event and serves on the Garden’s Development Committee.

Mary Hovden

Community Volunteer 

Mary Hovden is a retired organization development and change management consultant. She volunteers with the Animal Rescue League of Iowa, the Humane Society of the White Mountains and Desert Botanical Garden. She became a Volunteer in the Garden (VIG) in 2016 and has served in several areas including Guest Guide, Instructor Aide, Youth Programs and Special Events. She served on the VIG Board as Instructor Aide liaison, Vice President and President where she represented VIG interests as a Garden board trustee. She has a Bachelors in Industrial Distribution from Texas A&M University, a MEd in Adult Education and Human Resource Development from the University of Texas and an Masters in Business Administration from the University of Iowa.

Rea Mayer

Vice President, Practice Management Consultant | J.P. Morgan 

Rea Mayer is Vice President, Practice Management Consultant at J.P. Morgan. She leads advisor development and compensation for the west division and coaches Private Client Advisors across the U.S. with a focus on practice management. She has been in the wealth management industry since 2006 with prior experience at firms such as UBS Financial Services and RBC Wealth Management. She graduated from the University of California Los Angeles in 2005 with bachelor’s degrees in civil engineering and psychology. She is a current trustee of the Garden, as well as the former Monarch Council chair and current Planned Giving Committee chair. Rea lives in Chandler with her husband, daughter and twin sons.

Rachel A. Nicholas

Rachel Nicholas is an intellectual property partner at the law firm Womble Bond Dickinson. She partners with clients on trademark, copyright, publicity rights and social media matters. Rachel helps clients overcome the challenges found in selecting, clearing, registering and enforcing their trademarks and copyrights in the U.S. and internationally. She represents clients of all sizes and across a variety of industries, including providing counsel to local nonprofit organizations and startups. Rachel currently serves on the Desert Botanical Garden Foundation Board.

Dan Perez

President & CEO | Subrosa Investigations, LLC. 

Daniel Perez is founder and CEO of Subrosa Investigations, with nearly 50 years of investigative expertise, including his role as Commissioner of both the Grayslake Illinois Police Department and North Suburban Regional Task Force. Since 2000, he has held leadership positions with the Arizona Small Business Administration and Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce, while dedicating his efforts to Upward for Children and Families, a nonprofit serving disabled children. The former Desert Botanical Garden Board trustee has been married for 46 years, with four children and five grandchildren.

Michael Trejo is an entrepreneur focused on clean technology and industrial companies. Michael is a former owner and President & CEO of Standard Printing Company. Michael previously served on the boards of Be A Leader Foundation and the Alumni Council for the Center for Public Leadership at Harvard Kennedy School, and is a past president of the Harvard Business School Latino Alumni Association.  He serves on the Harvard Business School Club of Arizona board. Michael received his undergraduate degree at ASU, his Master’s in Public Policy (MPP) degree from Harvard Kennedy School and his MBA degree from Harvard Business School. Michael serves on the Garden’s Marketing & Community Engagement and Operations Support Committees.

Ken Udenze

Arizona Managing Partner | Deloitte  

Ken Udenze is the managing partner of Deloitte’s Arizona practice, with 30 years of experience in public accounting. He has worked with clients across a variety of industries, with a focus on energy, transportation and real estate Companies. He is highly experienced in addressing complex accounting, auditing and reporting matters. Ken is well traveled and has significant experience in adapting to different cultural protocols and establishing chemistry and coordination with both clients and his engagement team members across geographies. As managing partner of Deloitte’s Arizona practice, Ken is responsible for overall administration, civic and marketplace responsibilities for the practice in the state of Arizona. Ken is also on the board of the Sandra Day O’Connor Institute for American Democracy.

Lisa Urias

Lisa Urias founded Urias Communications in 2006, an agency focused on culturally competent communications. As Founder and President Emeritus, she played a pivotal role in shaping the agency’s mission and guiding its success which today is recognized as one of the most respected in the U.S. Southwest. Lisa has held significant roles, including Director of the Arizona Office of Tourism, Chief Community Engagement Officer at the Arizona Community Foundation, Partner at Alesco Consultores Southwest and Director of International Markets at SRP. Lisa’s expertise in marketing and communications has been widely recognized. She serves on numerous boards and committees, contributing her strategic insight to community engagement and public policy discussions.

Jamey Wetmore

Associate Professor | Arizona State University  

Jamey Wetmore is an associate professor in the School for the Future of Innovation and co-director of the Center for Engagement and Training in Science and Society at ASU. Jamey’s academic work centers on understanding how science and technology impact people and how people shape science and technology. Jamey became a member of the Garden the week he decided to move to Phoenix . He is a former trustee of the Garden, and former chair of its Community and Audience Engagement Committee.

David A. Young

Executive Director | Santa Fe Botanical Garden 

David A. Young received his BA and MA in biology from California State University Fullerton, and his Ph.D. in Botany (plant taxonomy-systematics) from Claremont Graduate University (at the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden). He served as the Director of the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden. David retired from Arizona State University, as the Vice President and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs.   David has been a board member of several non-profits including Desert Botanical Garden and currently serves on the board of the Museum of New Mexico Foundation and the School for Advanced Research (SAR) in Santa Fe. In 2022, he stepped down from the Board of the Santa Fe Botanical Garden (SFBG) to assume the duties of Executive Director of the SFBG as a volunteer.

FISCAL YEAR 2024 | AUDITOR’S REPORT

The fiscal 2024 financial statement audit was completed by CBIZ CPAs. The auditors issued an unmodified opinion on the consolidated financial statements of Desert Botanical Garden, Inc. and Affiliates as of and for the year ended Sept. 30, 2024 and reported no material weaknesses in internal control. Desert Botanical Garden’s Audit Committee accepted the audit as presented by the auditors. The audit was issued on January 28, 2025 and is available at https://dbg.org/financials/.
