Combine art and nature at home with this Cactus Box Guitar craft and continue your cactus exploration this summer with Desert Discovery Camps. Camp is designed for kids six to 12, campers explore nature and learn about the beauty of the desert. This year’s camp features science, outdoor skills, nature-inspired art, nature play and exploration. All summer camps include hands-on activities, guest speakers and exploration of the Garden trails.

Make a Cactus Box Guitar with recycled materials you can find at home. 

What you’ll need: 

  • Small box like an empty tissue box 
  • Rubber bands 
  • Paper towel tube 
  • Popsicle sticks
  • Tape and glue 
  • Scissors 
  • Decoration materials like construction paper and markers

Step 1: 

If not using a tissue box, cut a rectangular hole in the top of the box.

Step 2:

On one end, cut a circular hole large enough to fit the paper towel tube snugly. Insert the paper towel tube to become the neck of the guitar. Tape around the paper towel tube to secure.

    Step 3:

    Use rubber bands to stretch over the body of the guitar, passing the rubber bands over the hole. Experiment with the thickness, length and number of rubber bands used.

      Step 4:  

      Tape or glue two popsicle sticks together and insert under the rubber band guitar strings above and below the hole to make risers.

      Step 5:

      Decorate! Get creative and take inspiration from nature. Try a cactus or other cool desert plant to model your guitar after.
