From the small cottage vegetable patch to the elaborate eighteenth-century ornamental farm and today’s popular ornamental arrangements, vegetable gardens have undergone dramatic transformations during their history. This traveling exhibition featuring images from the Smithsonian’s Archives of American Gardens illustrates the development and popularity of the vegetable garden through images and documents from its collections. The exhibition also highlights the evolution of the vegetable garden in other cultures such as pre-Columbian Mexico and Ming dynasty China.
Feast Your Eyes: The Unexpected Beauty of Vegetable Gardens was developed by the Smithsonian Institution Horticultural Services Division in collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service.
